Young Children

The early years are a period of rapid development, and it is common for parents and carers to have questions about behaviour, emotions, learning, development, relationships and readiness for school.

At Family Minded, support for young children often involves working with both the child and the important adults around them. Depending on the child’s age and needs, this may include direct therapy, parent or caregiver consultations, assessment, or a combination of these.

We aim to understand what is happening for the child in the context of their development, temperament, relationships and environment, and to provide practical support that fits the family.

How we can help

Support for young children may include:

  • Big emotions, anxiety or worries

  • Behaviour that feels difficult to manage

  • Separation difficulties

  • Emotional regulation

  • Social confidence and friendships

  • Adjustment to change or family transitions

  • Neurodevelopmental differences

  • Sensory or developmental concerns

  • School readiness

  • Parenting support and guidance

  • Helping families understand what may be sitting underneath behaviour

Play Therapy

For some younger children, play is the most natural way to communicate and work through experiences.

Play Therapy provides a developmentally appropriate way for children to express themselves, build emotional awareness, develop coping skills and work through difficulties with the support of a trained clinician.

School Readiness

Families sometimes feel unsure about whether their child is ready for the academic, social, emotional and practical demands of starting school.

Our School Readiness Assessments can help build a clearer picture of a child’s strengths, developmental needs and readiness for Prep, and provide practical recommendations for the transition to school.

Parent & Caregiver Consultations

Sometimes the most helpful way to support a young child is by working directly with the adults around them.

Parent and caregiver consultations can help families better understand behaviour, emotional needs and developmental differences, and develop practical strategies for responding at home.

These sessions may be offered alongside a child’s therapy or as a support in their own right.

Parent Groups & Resources

We also offer groups and programs designed to help parents and carers better understand their child and build practical strategies for everyday family life.

Groups may focus on areas such as emotional regulation, transitions, neurodivergence, behaviour and supporting children through developmental challenges.
